 Add one more dual format disc type to the pile, as Bandai Visual will bring the HD DVD/DVD Twin disc to the U.S. June 26, with the release of its bestselling OVA Freedom, and will also be one of the first releases to include HDi network capabilities. As opposed to the combo releases so far that have HD DVD on one side, and DVD on the other, the Twin disc allows up to three layers of either HD DVD or DVD content on the same side of the disc, no flipping necessary. Your old-school DVD player might have trouble with the disc, so its been limited to Japan-only releases so far. Bandai's been working with Microsoft and Memory-Tech to tweak the VC-1 codec for Japanese anime, and the company says after this they will start releasing other HD DVD and Blu-ray titles in Japan and overseas. The SRP for Freedom Vol.1 (of 6) is $39.99 and while we don't know much about the series beyond its mix of CGI and 2D animation, it does heavily represent that most holiest of foods, ramen.

At just about the one year anniversary of the format war, it looks like Toshiba is throwing the next punch. HD DVD will be one step closer to that magic price point of $299, with that latest update of the MSRP of their HD DVD players. According to a few retailers at the AVSFroum on April 1st Toshiba will change the MSRP and the least expensive model; the A2 will now have an MSRP of $399. The A2 isn't the only model with a new price, as the other two models see a drop as well, the A20 will be $499 and finally the high end model, the XA2 for $799. So if price was the only thing stopping you from getting in the HD DVD game and the Xbox360 add-on just isn't your style, then now might just be the time. Of course some of you will still be waiting for the $600 Blu-ray player instead.

We're already seen Hitachi's 2007 domestic HDTV line-up at CES. However, Hitachi saved a bit of Wooo-niqueness for their Japanese launch. The new XR01 and HR01 series of sets consists of five new TVs boasting a world's first: an integrated iVDR removable storage module -- a portable storage format used almost exclusively in Japan. In fact, Hitachi stuffs a 250GB IVDR-S ("S" as in SAFIA DRM) disk into the bay to get your started. These disks can then be plugged into compatible bays on your video recorder, PC, camcorder, etc, for easy portability of your media. The XR01 series is the only set to offer 1080p panels: the 50-inch P50-XR01 Full HD ALIS plasma and 37-inch L37-XR01 Full HD IPSα (120Hz) LCD. The P50 features 1100cd/m2 brightness and 10,000:1 contrast ratio while the L37 brings along a 500cd/m2 brightness and 7,000:1 contrast. The pair of HR01 PDPs pack a 1024 x 1080 resolution with the 42-inch P42-HR01 offering a 10,000:1 contrast and 1,500cd/m2 brightness while the 37-inch P37-HR01 goes 3,000:1 and 1,300cd/m2. Bringing up the tail is the 32-inch L32-HR01 with 1366 x 768 resolution, 500cd/m2 brightness and 7,000:1 contrast. All the sets ship with a dual terrestrial digital tuners coupled with dual terrestrial analog tuners and come loaded with inputs: 3x HDMI, 2x Japanese D4, 2x S-Video, 3x composite, Firewire, and Ethernet just to name a few. The top end P50 plasma is expected by mid-May for ¥570,000 ($4,840) while the L32 LCD is expected to pop on April 20th for about ¥250,000 ($2,123). Japan only, naturally.

Sanyo's waterproof TV managed to slip under our CeBIT radar last week, but not for long. It appears they were showing off the sexily-named 42LM4WPR-E (oh yeah, speak nerdy to us), a 42-inch HDTV that stands out among a sea of HDTVs (pun intended) by being one of the few waterproof models on the market. Granted, there are very few particular applications which would require the average Engadget reader to require a watertight HDTV, but we have been meaning to install something like this in our working rain-forest simulator at the Engadget compound, and now's as good a time as any to buy.

It really doesn't take a keen eye for news these days to spot the all-out PR blitz by team Blu-ray to convince the masses that the format war is over and Blu-ray has won. Now Toshiba is finally sticking up for itself, in specific response to Blu-ray's recent CeBIT press conference. Olivier Van Wynendaele, Deputy General manager of HD DVD at Toshiba, calls the Blu-ray claims "propaganda" and disputes the Blu-ray points. For instance, the new 3:1 sales figure being touted by the Blu-ray Disc Association in regards to Blu-ray to HD DVD sales is claimed by Wynendaele to be artificially inflated by free Blu-ray movie vouchers being redeemed by PlayStation 3 owners. He also notes that Toshiba has sold 200,000 HD DVD players in the US, in comparison to the 30,000 standalone Blu-ray players sold, and that it's not clear yet how many Blu-ray movies the two million PS3 owners are going to be watching. Olivier also promised that Toshiba will undercut Sony prices every step of the way, and made it clear that while HD players account for less than 1% of DVD player sales, it's way too early to call the war for either side.

Japan's TransTechnology is back and ready to loose their latest all-media streamer, the DVX-700. The box will ship in two flavors -- the tethered M10, or wireless 802.11b/g M20 -- and comes packing a DVD player and removable 3.5-inch HDD (optional) for sneakernetting your data back-and-forth to an optional USB or IDE enclosure for your PC. Otherwise, you can push your media around via DLNA support with like-spec'd devices on the home network. The unit touts a Sigma Designs' EM8620L media processor like the newer AVeL LinkPlayers we've already seen from I-O Data. As such, you can expect support for WMV HD, MPEG-1/2/4, XviD, WMV9 video; DVD-ripped ISO image files; and MP3, AAC, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, and WAV (PCM) audio. It even supports direct Google Video browsing and playback with the help of a USB keyboard and/or remote control. Video outs include DVI and Japan's digital D4 both supporting up to 1080i. Yours in Japan starting tomorrow for ¥27,800 ($237) with wires or ¥30,800 ($264) without.

 Another day, another all-in-one solution for copying AACS-protected HD DVDs hits the streets. Fengtao Software has thrown support for the next generation format into the latest beta version (3.0.9.0) of its DVDFab copying software. Following in the steps of Slysoft's AnyDVD HD, the maker of DVDFab HD Decrypter says Blu-ray backup support is "coming soon", and that it's capable of copying an HD DVD to the hard drive -- sans any copy protection restrictions -- in less than one hour. Of course the changelog doesn't provide details on how DVDFab does it's unDRMing thing, but with so many methods available, does it really matter which one? Still no word on how AACS LA plans to respond to the growing availability of easy hacks and DRM-free HD editions of Hollywood's latest, but at this rate we'll have a war between various makers of one-click backup software to rival Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.

"Xtreme" laptop OEM Rock has just announced its upcoming Meivo all-in-one PC, a Vista-powered 22-inch monster that features Core 2 Duo processors and several internal tuner options. Coming at the end of April for an even £1,000, Meivo is built around a 1,680 x 1,050 panel sporting side-mounted memory card slots and USB ports, with WiFi, Bluetooth, 7.1 output, and a pair of drive bays rounding out the specs. As far as tuners go, you get your choice of analog, digital, or hybrid -- all MXM compliant for easy expansion and upgrades. Probably not the best machine for power computing, but for watching the full season of Jericho so far on CBS Innertube from bed, this would make a good choice.

 While we're sure quite a few of you are taking the day off to enjoy the first few days of March Madness in HD on your beautiful Philips plasma display, we certainly hope you weren't planning on eventually replacing it with yet another Philips. Turns out that Rudy Provoost, CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics, has reportedly announced that the outfit will "phase out of the PDP market and focus on LCD TVs in the future." Interestingly, it sounds like the presumably lucrative (or not) North American / Australian markets will still have the opportunity to purchase its plasmas for an undisclosed amount of time to come, while the rest of the world (including China later this year) will be forced to look elsewhere to satisfy their PDP needs. Of course, this isn't the first time a major player has dropped out of the plasma game entirely, but ranking fourth worldwide with just a ten-percent market share apparently wasn't enough for Philips to hang on any longer. So, Sony, you still looking to scratch the re-entry itch?

Update: Philips wanted to let us know that Plasma is still on their plate for 2007: "Incorrectly reported comments on a Russian news website have suggested that Philips is pulling out of the PDP (Plasma Display Panel) FlatTV market. For the foreseeable future, Philips will continue to include gas plasma-based sets in its overall product mix of FlatTVs sold around the world. Since Philips introduced the world's first plasma-based FlatTV over 10 years ago, it has consistently applied the best display technologies available to meet consumer needs, using both plasma and LCD panels to manage the product mix in the most optimum way. However, it is widely acknowledged that over time LCD will become the dominant flat panel TV technology, serving all screen sizes currently addressed by both LCD and PDP solutions, and this will inevitably shape Philips' product strategy in this market segment."

Linksys has a new wireless media adapter today, the KiSS 1600, which fairly synonymous with fellow router-pusher Netgear's Digital Entertainer HD. As expected, KiSS 1600 streams high def digital video, audio, and photos (sorry, we're light on info about codecs) from the internet or any locally networked device straight to your TV set. And thanks to its HDMI connection, DVDs get upscaled 720p. Unfortunately the nitty-gritty specs are incog for now, but you'll be able to purchase (not steal) a KiSS sometime soon for a hefty £259.99 (about $503).

We thought this little dude looked familiar -- strikingly similar to one of Toshiba's prototypes from CEDIA last year. Now the real deal, Tosh's slim 'n trim PA35 external HD DVD drive will latch onto your PC via USB 2.0 for plug-and-play HD capability. The PA35 delivers 7.1 channels of hi-res audio to accompany hi-def eye candy, but only a ho-hum 1x HD DVD read speed -- since you can't do any burning, maybe they assume that you won't be reading any data discs either (plus hey, what do you expect for under four benjamins?). You can still count on it for trusty multi-drive duties with write speeds of 4x to DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, 16x to CD-R, 10x to CD-RW, 2.4x to DVD+R DL, 2x to DVD-R DL, and 3x to DVD-RAM. So if you're raring for some HD DVD action on the fairly cheap, this one's all yours for about $370.

This streaming media receiver was unveiled at CES earlier this year, but Netgear's officially made it available for your living room. To refresh your memory, the Digital Entertainer HD (EVA8000) basically promises to do everything to amuse you short of growing limbs and break dancing on your coffee table. It's got an HDMI port with resolutions up to 1080p, connects to 802.11 b / g WiFi networks, and controls PC-PVR recordings remotely (with a not-included TV tuner card). It streams nearly anything, including HD movies, BitTorrent downloads, internet radio, RSS feeds, music, videos, and Flickr photos, from nearly any device, like your networked PCs, flash drives, iPods, or digital cameras. Netgear's right on point with their projected first quarter release -- units went on sale today on select e-commerce sites at around $399 a pop. The Digital Entertainer HD will be available at e-commerce sites, retailers, and resellers worldwide sometime in Q2 2007.

 Mitsubishi has announced a bundle of new LCD TVs for the Japanese market today, catering to both high end customers and those less so with its new REAL MZ and REAL MX series sets. The MZ models are the bigger and more capable of the two, coming in 40 and 46-inch varieties, each boasting the coveted 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, with a 2,000:1 contrast ratio and the usual complement of inputs, including a pair of HDMI ports. The MX series takes things down a notch in both size and specs, available in 26, 32, and 37-inch models, with a slightly less impressive 1,366 x 768 resolution, and HDMI inputs on the two larger models but none on the lowly 26-incher. Look for all five of the TVs to be available in Japan next month, coming in between 150,000 Yen and 430,000 Yen, or rougly $1,300 to $3,700.

With CeBIT just around the corner, Samsung isn't wasting any time and has already announced their new lineup for Europe; the M87, R87 and Q97 series of TVs. The M-series -- available in 37, 40, 46, and 52-inch sizes -- are all 1080p and include 3 HDMI ports, even one on the side for your cameras and camcorders; for those of you without HDMI outputs, there is a 9-1 card reader. As expected the contrast ratios get better year to year and this year's 32-inch and 37-inch models feature an 8,000:1 contrast ratio, while the 40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch models are at 15,000:1. The new sets will be available in the UK in April with a MSRP of £1,200 ($2322), £1,300 ($2516), £2,000 ($3870) and £2,500 ($4838.00). Samsung hasn't given up on plasma, and new this year is the Q-series, available in 46-inch and 50-inch models with a contrast ratio of 15,000:1 -- really shows you how far LCD technology has come when Samsung's LCDs and plasmas share the same spec. The R-series is the 720p lineup and ranges in size from 19-inch at £400 ($774) all the way to 40-inch, and even a one in white for those who don't like piano black.
